That's truly the bomb. Mike and I were happy in meeting you at Tong's, and also helping you pick it out from the many they had there.

Currently I am having problems with my fans and cooling, so I am getting flucutations, because of that, and my cherry head goby tossing LS on the new yellowish brain. I am getting tissue recession, exposing it's shell on one side. It's pissin' me off, but I am kinda helpless in the situaton. I may have to give them to Mike and he'll capalize here, :)

yeh, i noticed a potential problem with having him on the sand bed, and that is occasionally sand will end up on him. can that cause the tissue recession? also the crazy nassarius snails burrow under him and move him around!

a lil sand isn't too bad, cuz when they fatten up real big like a bubble, it'll shove all that sand off. If it's excessive sand like it's being buried, clean it off him by blasting it off with a turkey baster.

The continual irritation of the sand can definitely cause tissue recession, and possibly kill it. I went away for a weekend, and my jawfish buried half my purple plate coral. When I cleared it off, nearly half of the tissue was gone. It only lasted about a week after that. I'd just move the brain up off the sandbed, that way the goby won't be dumping sand on it. It should be fine higher up on the rock.

Then that's what killed mine (yeah, it died or most of it was dead) I wrapped what was left of it, and tossed it in the trash. Stupid goby! There was just too much sand getting on him and I wasn't around to do much as I work all day  Goby won this round!

That is too bad. honestly steven, the shots of your two brain corals is what got me lookin at them. Well now i will probably move mine up off the sand now. sorry to hear of your loss.

I have found brains are quite capably of clearing sand off of themselves, but of course any continual irritation will take its toll. Sorry to hear you lost it dragon. In regards to what incysor said though, you have to be very careful if you put a brain or any solitary coral on rock. They inflate/deflate to such enormous amounts (my green trachy for example can deflate down to about 5 inches and balloon up to almost 10 when it is cleaning itself off) that the rock can actually tear their flesh in the process if it gets hooked or caught. They are better off in the sand whenever possible.

Just an update...

Just thought I would update since my brain is not settling in. Took these pics today...enjoy!

One question, too, what do these guys like to eat? I remember that Mike suggested feeding at night when the tentacles are extended, which it does every night, just cant remember what he suggested to feed.

Thanks for takin a peek.

Wow,

Can we say healthy? Yes we can in fact this type of coral IMO has the greatest chance of survival on the sandbed.

Just watch for the elements that plaqued dragons coral. They like a lot of space so keeping them from bumping anything will help them also.

It's fun feeding these guys at night, I enjoyed feeding mine fresh water mysis and frozen cube food, he took to both.

If you have krill or even some sinking pellets will also do fine.... Let us know how he takes to your feedings....

Mike

P.S
It was great meeting you in person at Tongs, my brother is having so much fun teasing me every chance he gets about how I mistaken your name for Justin when it's Jesse.

Just to let you know, I'm an admissions advisor and a part time instructor at a private junior college and I never get names, only faces; so I told dragon to back off but he still will call me and say so have you spoken to Justin :)

Mike its fairly easy to see that you and Steven are brothers the way he likes to rib you. I have never tried to keep an open brain before but from this thread I have learned enough to feel comfortable in doing so if the desire ever arises. Keep all of the good info coming. Skip

what a great combination of colors! congrats!

I have kept two brains and both have moved on to the afterlife. Its too bad too because IMO they are some of the prettiest corals available.

My first one died because my cleaner shrimp developed an appetite for it(I know cleaner shrimp... who'd a thought?) and the second met its demize just like mentioned above.... kept getting buried with sand by my goby.

I definitely want another but just dont want to sacrifice another. Apperently brains dont like me.... my wife will validate!... LOL!!
