Cyano Outbreak

Hello everyone,

recently my tank has gone through an outbreak of cyano. I beleive that the cause was an old light and an old bag of chemi pure. I recently replaced the light and I can visibly tell that there was a difference in color between the two lights. Anyways, I have been considering using chemi clean to get rid of the cyano. After using the chemi clean I then plan on replacing the old chemi pure. Does anyone have comments, good or bad?

Thanks in advance,
Ben

Was size tank is it and how many GPH do you have? You may want to back off your lights for a few days, manually remove as much as you can, and try to decrease the amount of excess nutrients in the water. Cyano cannot grow in areas of moderate to high flow, so increasing the overall flow or even the flow in the affected areas will help.

I would try a reduced lighting period along with new carbon/Chemipure, reducing feeding, and manual removeal before going with the chemical method. You can always use the chemicals like ChemiClean if all else fails. I personally like to use chemicals as a last resort. I you do go with the ChemiClean make sure you figure your water volume in your tank and not the total capacity so you don't overdose.

Also, a refugium stocked with chaetomorpha would be very helpful.
Since the macro algae absorbs the extra nutrients that is probably supplying the cyano (this worked for me)

Good luck and keep us updated

Today I tried to remove some cyano and it isn't going to well. The cyano on the rocks is very difficult to remove and progress is VERY slow. I beleive that the main problem was my light and with that fixed the cyano shouldn't come back once I rid the tank of it. So Im going to order some chemi clean and a new bag of chemi pure. Thanks for the help and Ill try to get some before and after pictures.

Also thanks for the capacity tip, I probably would have dosed wrong...

Sorry for such a delayed fallow up, but this how it all went down...

The chemi-clean worked fairly well. I didn't get an extremly clean tank right away like some people claimed to have happened to them. However after a few treatments the cyano began to die off and now my tank is free of it. I didn't get any before or after pics, but I just wanted to share incase someone was curious of the outcome.
