Crazy lighting question, MH

Ok so I'm sure this topic has been beaten to death a thousand times but what I have to ask is a little different.
Ok so I know you can't go out and buy one of those portable shop work
lights even though they say their 200 or 300 watt. You know the ones with
the HQI bulbs. But what if you bought a ballast that gives the power you
need and the right bulb and rig it up to use in one of those work lights
housing?? That way you get the sockets and the reflectors and you just
need to wire it up to the new ballast? If anyone can find a thread or a web
page showing me this can or cant be done that would be great.

So long as the connectors work for the bulb and are rated for the amount of energy going through them it should work wonderfully. I would honestly call the maker of the shop light and ask how much can the pieces handle. If you do this let us know how it turns out.

LOL well if all that is usefully is the housing then it's not very usefully :). I was hoping to use the sockets as well but if thats the case then I'll skip that idea. Besides I could buy or build a much better reflector then that. So now I just need to find a place to get a cheap ballast. There is a lighting and fixture supply warehouse by me I was thinking of looking there. What specs should I look for in a ballast. I know it depends on what bulb I get if it's a pulse or probe start. I'm thinking of a 150 watt bulb of some type in the 14,000 k range. So some tips on a few good bulbs would be nice too. Thanks.

Electronic ballasts are the best for MH...magnetics can shorten the life of the bulb and produce more heat.... Check out this site http://www.illuming.com/

The Aromat ballast is great, but the metal halide retro kits the best deal and are fantastic. This guy is very trusted...he is a dedicated member of another reef site. The kits are literally plug-n-play, complete with reflector, uv glass, socket, bulb, pre-wired cord and ballast...this is the 70 watt kit that i have over my 20L along with a couple fluorescents.

Thanks for the link, I think I have come across that before and considered getting the 150 watt. Not a bad price. But thanks again for the help :)
