It's certainly possible that you could get a good hitchhiker.

A general rule for crabs is if their carapace appears hairy, or if their claws are black, then they're not something you want in your tank.

Speaking of which, it appears I had more than one gorrilla crab in my tank. I found a dead one a couple weeks ago, and I was thrilled, then last week I saw this guy.

Yep....no luck so far...We'll be ordering the new octo soon though, so eventually it'll end up as octo food if it doesn't go in the jar. :wink:

Back then, he'd impress the hell out of me by showing me how it eats when he'd throw a goldfish in there (I was like 8), ha ha ha

Yep..we really enjoyed the last one. Just needed to get through the move and all the upgrades to make sure everything was stable before ordering a new one.

Ohhh!

There were ones that were a little hairy, but when I found them in the bottom of our live rock shipment at the pet store last night, I didn't put them in my tank. The ones i did put in were gray, and when I touched them, they made themselves in to a rock. The other ones were small, and had kind of burgundy coloured claws, and some little spots. I will try and get pics, but the little turkeys are hiding now of course!

I went with the boss out to the airport to help with ourlive rock and coral shipment. i had an ulterior motive though, of course. I got first crack at the coral! So I picked out a really pretty green mushroom. Today I want to get some kind of button polyp or something. I will post a pic in the pictures forum later. I just got a really sweet shot of it!

you should setup a small QT tank for your new stock. You can pick up something at your LFS for about 45 bucks, and it comes with tank, light(the light you can change to a 50/50 pc) and filter. (Redsea Pico .75) It's at least something. That way you can see what critters are hiking in your purchases and rid them if they are bad, and keep them if good.

I didn't have a qtank back when I got a green ricordia, but I found it came with a crab. It was a decorator crab from the pictures I took when I put it in for ID, in most cases they supposed to be harmless, but because they pick at corals and zoos to make them as home on their shell, it can harm your livestock as it did mine. It killed the ricordia and it never recovered. it ended up being dissolved into goo, it was sad :( Now the only crab I have is one that I purchased and gets along just fine, it's an emerald crab. :)

incysor (sorry for going off topic) but what kind of octopus did you keep and what is the tank size? I saw this really cool site www.octopets.com that sells captive bred octopus for $35 each and $60 for 2 and so on. You should check it out seems they eat pods and baby clams (which you can buy on the site also, along with octo eggs) :D

Yep...I got mine from fishsupply.com. It was a bimac, same as on octopets. Either the octopets guys supply them to fishsupply, or they're both ordering from the same supplier.

www.tonmo.com is the best source of information on keeping cephalopods.

My octo tank is right at the lower limit of the proper tank size to try to keep pretty much any octo that you'll come across in the hobby. It's a 40g oceanic cube.

Have you caught the ugly crab? I hated that sucker when it appeared in my 70 gallon tall reef tank.

I remember he looked identical to your pictures. Man it brought back bad memories, almost like seeing a picture of that bully who took my lunch money, j/k.

But yeah that crab brought me headaches, he ate a lot of my fish in the night. He also had black pincers, but when I bought my octopus, he took care of him, I was so happy.
