None of the tanks at the LFS's in my area cover thier halide bulbs to prevent water spashing and other things. I have single ended bulb and wonder if I need to cover it. I have my hood built and wonder if it needs this small addition.
You dont HAVE to cover SE halides. Unless it is a couple inches away from the surface where it could be splashed, dont worry about it. It will just unnecessarily cut down on the PAR of the lights.
