Picked this up from a LFS today. I was hesitant about getting it but it had a very cheap price and I justhad to indulge myself.

Did you get it from Village? I saw a piece there on Saturday that looked very similar. Andy from Fish Land has some similar looking stuff in one of his tanks, and said it's some kind of macro-algea, but typical of Andy, couldn't tell me the name or anything else about it. :)
In a year and a half I've never seen anything that looked like it listed on any online vendor pages under corals, so I figure he's probably right. I'd try posting over on RC and see what they have to say about it.

I have no idea...never seen anything like that. It kinda looks like little colt corals branching off the rock but I know its not. anyone else?

Yup, got it from Village. I asked the guy helping me but he did not know what it was. He said his coral guy was not there today. I never seen anything like it either, thats why I got it. It does resemble little colts, but it does't....I know, makes alot of since.

Here is what I have managed to find out.

They resemble Isaurus sp. Commonly called Snake Polyps, actually a type of Zoanthid. The polyps usually only extend at night. They are also a rare find. People are paying $30-$60 for a single polyp. The rock I have has about 15-20 polyps and more growing. If it is this species, I guess I got a bargain for $5 for the colony.

Well, turned the lights out about an hour ago. Just looked at them with a light and they are all erect with white polyps extended from the tips. I guess they are snake polyps after all. During the day, they are limp and hung over, now they are sticking straight up.

You know, I could make a comment here, but personally I like to work for my comic relief...
