Colorless at night?

I have this one rock that alot of different stuff keeps poping up on. About a week ago, I noticed what looked like a green algea come out of a crack in this rock. When it started to grow out it looked like a green stalk with a plate balanced on top. They are still tiny (not sure if they even get bigger). In this week, more have grew out. Last night I got the flashlight and was looking at the tank about midnight and I noticed that this new plant had turned white after the lights went out. I wasn't sure if I was seeing things or if that had actually happened, but this morning my husband mentioned the new plant changing color. So he noticed it too. This morning about half an hour after the lights came on when my husband mentioned it I went and looked and they were green again. Anyone know what this might be and if this is normal.

Here is a picture of what I was trying to decribe. It has taken off and growing at light speed. I've taken everybit out about a 2 weeks ago, and you can see what has grown back! Good/Bad?

If it is Calerpa you are lucky! That's one type of algae that is always welcomed in reef tanks. They help break down nitrates naturally. I've tried to grow them in the past after seeding my tank with them but to no avial

This stuff grows just fine let me tell you. Ended up taking the whole rock out of the tank, and with tweezers pulling it all out! It is now in my fuge.

Most calupera reproduces vegetatively, which means if a little bit breaks off and gets lodged in the right space, it can become a new plant. It's what makes it such a pain to get rid of, you have to be very careful, so even if it's in your fuge, still be carefull b/c a small piece could break off and float into your main tank....

Another reason why you should never empty your tank into a storm drain, invasive spieces can get a foothold in your environment and screw up the ecosystem.

I agree about the drainage. Just out of curiousity, does that apply to SW species? How long will they live in FW (time it takes to make it back to SW)?
