Clownfish Hosts

Ok so based on everyone's advice - it doesn't sound like anemones are anything I want to mess with. Are there corals that will host clownfish that anyone knows about?

yep yep, it's quite possible they'll host something else. Not that they need to or not, but it's cool to see them find something as "home" Mine loves my cleaner magnet and my bi-directional nozzle ::sighs::

DJ,

I'll have to back you up on that statement. My clown loves my metallic green frog spawn. He hovers over it ever so closely sometimes nudgeing it slightly. He doesn't force himself in like an anenome but he prefers it over a nice RBTA that my wife bought for me for my clown.

My Clowns will host in my long polyped toadstool, Pulsating Xenia and if they have pestered those to corals to the point that they have retracted their polyps they will host in my green star polyps. The toadstool was their favorite until I got the xenia now the Xenia is their preferred host.

This one is pretty much impossible to predict. I've had clowns host pink polyps, goniopora, mushrooms, green star polyps and the cleaning magnet. Wavy corals tend to get a bit more action, but you just never know.

during the first week or so the Xenia closed up every time the clown touched it but now it seems to have gotten use to the little guy. It does still close up now and then for them most part though all is ok.

Hi,

I've seen them host everything: elegance corals (they're still hardy in this part of the world), any euphyllia, sacrophytons, xenias, GSP, shrooms, zoos, night time bubble, a sea apple; really everything. Even non living things like peoples magnets and pumps.

If i were you i'd try a euphyllia, sacrophyton or xenia first. Most success with them. Btw, i beg to differ about your comment about anemones. I've kept an electric blue carpet anemone going for more than 3 years as well as a magnificent for half that time.

Although i wouldnt recommend a magnificent to anyone, carpets have many pros; just as long as you keep the lights and water quality okay (NO3 below 20, no kidding). Carpets stay in the sand only (no more displaced corals) dont move around much, eat like pigs (although occasionally there are reports of them eating EVERYTHING including yellow tangs).

Still, despite this, they are reasonably high maintainence creatures. I think if you've had a couple years (sucessful) exp, go for a carpet; bearing in mind that the coloured (green, yellow, white, red, pink, purple, blue) ones are much harder to care for than the normal browns.

Hope this helps. Pls dont flame me too much for advocating anemones.

PS. Just realised this was in the beginners forum so, um, better not try the carpets. But keep them in mind for next tank. Definately most beautiful animals in the sea.

I've seen the carpets in pictures and they are gorgeous but since this is my first reef tank I won't be getting into those. Though I appreciate the suggestion! :D
