Yeah, I run a carbon pad every once and a while in my AC150 in my 5.5 just to really polish the water off. I usually run it for a month or so then trash it.

They are chreap so why not right?

I generally change mine once a month, more if I start to see algae buildup, corals looking unhappy, etc...

Same here, when I ran my AC filters as a regular filters, I ran the carbon and the sponge. Cleaned the sponge weekly, and replaced the sponge and carbon monthly.

You can run it all the time but there are some negatives to running it 24/7. Carbon will remove some trace elements and other misc items you does your tank with...kind of a vicious circle. It removed lots of bad and some good....

Anyhow, I use it occasionally when my tank looks cloudy or sluggish inbetween water changes. Def. doesn't hurt to run it but thought I'd add that there are minor drawbacks.
