Can i pick your brains again for a second? Ok :)

Question(s):

What is a surface skimmer?
What's the value of having one in a nano tank?
Are HOB filters necessary? I am using a deep Sand bed and live rock for biological filtration, should I get an HOB?
MoonLights. What are they, are they useful (other than being cool) and is there a way to make them yourself (DIY Project)?

Thanks y'all.

A sruface skimmer is a simple device (some people make them out of something as simple as a cassette tape) that helps to skim water from the surface as opposed to below the surface. This help to alleviate the protein film that forms on the surface of the water. This film can block the gas exchange that normally takes place. The surface skimmer is the only real way to effectively remove this pesky film.

HOB filters are not necessary, however they are a very effective way of running chemical filtration such as carbon, chemipure, or purigen. They can also be modified with a surface skimmer rather easily. Thirdly, they add water circulation...

Moonlights help to stimulate natural nocturnal behaviors of corals, including breeding which most corals tend to do at night. You can make them yourself using a blue LED and wiring to a standard 6v dc power adapter that can be easily and inexpensivly purchased at most electronic supply store.
