Battery Backup

I saw this on the local craigslist:

Basically what he did was to take an APC computer battery backup system and to swap out the small internal batter with a car battery. He claims it'll keep a 50 watt pump operating for 10hrs. Now this is actually an awesome idea to keep your main pump operating if the power goes out. Forget lights and heater, just the pump to keep the tank from stagnating and your corals from dying.

Has anyone else done anything like this? I'm seriously interested in contacting this guy to see how he did it.

I've heard of folks using battery backups to run powerheads and an bubbler air pump. This tends to use less electricity. I'd certainly write the guy and see how easy it is to convert the backup so it uses a car battery.

I have almost that exact same UPS here at my house. I'm not currently using it b/c I thought it just didn't have enought juice. I'd be really interested to see how exactly he modified it. Let us know.

Is there any modification needed other than making the connections if the battery is already 12 volts on the back up?

Beats me. I know the guy now, he's on sdreefs and I'm going to put my anoreix purple candy canes in his tank this weekend. HOepfully they'll recover there. I'll ask about his battery backup system again.
