Ballast warming up

I wonder if anyone can rationalize this. I have a coralife power center that I use as a timer for my lights in NanoCube. I have stock lighting (48 watts). I decided to try out my other cube with the same wattage of lights and plugged it to the power center at the same time as the other since the coralife had a spare outlet. Somehow one of the ballasts became hotter than the other and gave of a burnt smell. But it still is working. So I made everything cool down then tried the hot ballast again....this time it stayed cool. What gives? Does it have anything to do with the power center?

Thanks for the reply...and sorry for the double post...I was really getting anxious. But do you think there is such a possibility that the coralife is the culprit? I was using it for 2-1/2 months till I plugged in another ballast. Oh by the way, the other post was more recent because now both ballasts have burned out. When I posted this, it was still working. But I'll post another thread regarding that.

If the ballasts aren't heating up when they're plugged directly into the wall, then I'd say the coralife is definitely the problem.

I did your suggestion now, just waiting to see if it heats up. My recent burn out took 3 hours before my fiance heard it pop. Thats because I set my lights to go on at 10AM and by 1PM it just totally burned out.....the transormer for the fan...the lights are still fine.

I have heard and read about the Reefkeeper and with positive results. If its the coralife that caused the problem, then good, I now have an excuse to get a reefkeeper for my birthday. I can use the coralife for my 2.5 MB Pico project since it wont be as elaborate as my NanoCube. I have modded it already, Fuge-HOB surface skimmer, Fan, Moonlights, but will be using a 10watt 50/50 bulb for now which I have centered in the canopy by cutting pieces here and there.

Ballast has been plugged to the wall for the past 45 minutes and still is cool to the touch. I'm still hoping for the best. Thank you Incysor and the rest of you guys...

After more than 3 hours with the ballast plugged directly to the wall socket....well what do you know, my ballast just stayed normally warm and did not overheat.....now thats progress!!!

It looks like an impressive piece of equipment...but IMO a waste of money for a nano.

Then again my nanos don't have MH, heater, chiller, multiple PHs, (or any for that matter), so I guess if you had all of that on your nano it might be worth the money.

I wouldn't plug anything else into the coralife until I'd tested it out with a couple table lamps for a month or so.

Actually I'm still using the coralife but only for 2 pronged plugs which seem to be fine. It was only the ballast of my lighting that was 3 pronged....So i'm guessing that it would be okay for my Pico since I'll only be using basic equipment, even the lights will be using the stock socket and since it doesnt have a ballast....nothing elaborate for it. But for my NanoCube, I may have to get rid of the coralife later. What kind of powerstrip and timer should I get for my ballast? Because now I want to play everything safe. I'm really surprised on how a powerstrip can make a difference.
