I have desided to get a 24gal and my Mom is thinking of doing the same. But I'm not sure how to cycle the tank. The last time I started a tank I have a little bottle of like dry alge or something that I had to put in. But I was thinking of using the argalive sand. Is this the best / easiest way?

Also what is the easiest and cheapest way to make a auto topoff or should I just buyone?

Welcome back! and Welcome to nanotank.com IMO the easiest way to cycle the tank would be to buy a little bit of live rock, and some live sand from an established aquarium. This has tons of beneficial bacteria, and often times some LFS will give you a baggie sand to "seed" your aquarium. As for ATO's I just bought one because I didn't want to have to figure out how everything had to be put together, but that is just me.

Thanks for the reply. Does the live sand you buy at the store not work a well as the stuff from the LFS? Or is it just better to seed from well cycled tank.

I'm not sure really, I used the sand you are talking about, but I also used a piece of Live rock as well. SO I can not give a one over the other comparison, but I have had my tank going for a 6+ months now without too much hassle. Also I would grab that BC 29 barring no flaws in it. a new one is at least $300. I had a Aquapod 14 when I first started and I Loved it, currently looking for a BC 29 to transfer to though.

sand

live rock is your best bet ;and the eseyist way to clean sand is not to have it. to have a relly good denitafing sand bed hould be 5 to 6 inch's less then that can colects a lot of wast. sand is also very meesy. i have a 20 gal long with a bear bottom and it's so esey to cleen. PS sorry about the spelling.
