Baby Snowflake

Hi Guys,

I am still waiting for my LFS to get some seahorses in. I am thinking of getting a baby snowflake eel for my 30G tank while I wait for my LFS to get the permits for seahorses (2-3 months away). There is nothing in my tank right now (I sold off all of my fish and shrimp) and I always wanted an eel (I will be giving it to another reefer when I get my seahorses of corse).

My question is, I have a sandstar will the snowflake be having that for lunch? I also have a few hermits but I can move them to the refuge for a few months.

Thanks,

Eric

Just watch your cleaning crew and shrimp as they eat those things ....also watch that his beak doesnt over grow as this can cause them to starve ........their beaks continually grow so he will need something with shells to wear them down .....so now post pics of him what kind is he huh huh huh huh LOL they are a neet fish and should do well in a 30 just be sure to keep the water clean as they are piggy eaters lol

I got rid of my cleaning crew, I just have a star. I want to get some mean fish.

I will try and get a few pic's of him tonight he is a bit camera shy. He is so cool.

My wife let me buy a big tank on the weekend 48G with a real nice stand and a fitted hood (it looks so much nicer then our old tank). I am in the process of upgrading to it. I am going to be shopping for a small trigger soon.

On another note; I can not get any seahorses there is a new law in Canada and all the LFS can not get any seahorses and there is a lot of coral (mostly SPS) that they can not seem to get as well (I was tanking to the manager at a LFS and he was telling me this) is this a problem in the USA?

Thanks,

Eric

Most of the seahorses we are able to get here in the US are captive Bred (ORA is one of the larger suppliers, they are located in Ft. Pierce, FL). They are also available from hobbiests that have bred them in their homes. It is getting harder to find wild caught seahorses but then it makes more sense to buy captive bred ones anyway. There are more and more coral farms as well so I haven't noticed any corals that are hard to get other than corals with a delicate shipping reputation.

I am not currently aware of any restrictions on seahorses here in the US ...
Cute Saddle Valentini Puffer he should do well in your 30 he certianly looks healthy. Offer lots of shelled items for him to wear down his "beak" also be sure to over filter as these guys are not the cleanest eaters out there  So whatcha name him ?

I am going to get a Trigger first and make sure that he makes it before I name him, But I am open to ideas of good names for him?

I am not too sure what trigger to get I only have a 50G (I know that I will have to move the trigger to a bigger tank someday) From what I have been read they only grown 1"-3"a year. If I get a small one he could be ok in that tank for a year or two with my puffer.

It will just be my Puffer and a trigger in that tank.

Not to sure what kind of Trigger to get, I know things can go bad with any trigger but it is a chance I am going to take. I have a QT standing by that I could hold a fish while I look for a better home if I have to.

Thanks,

Eric

Hi Sadielynn, Thanks for the info.

I am going to try and find Blue Throat Triggerfish but I have never seen one in Calgary before (I have heard these guys are real peaceful, well peacfull for a trigger). If not I am going to buy a Niger Triggerfish or a Humu Picasso Triggerfish (I have to find one smaller then my puffer).

I was also thinking of add a Tang first. Then I would have puffer, Trigger and tang in a 48 is that too much (That is only 3 fish in my tank)? What would be a good small tang that might get along with these guys or another fish that I could try?

Thanks,

Eric

sadielynn,

You know me always trying to push the tank to the limt.

I am thinking going with a trigger or a Tang (I will only pick one) and maybe a small Aggressive Damselfish. Like this one;

If I go with a Tang what would be a nice one for my tank, I think it needs to be real mean. Or a bit bigger then the Puffer.

Thanks,

Eric

not to hi-jack this thread, but can a Clown be put with a snowflake eel in a 20L? I just purchased an entire set-up and it comes with a snowflake eel. Wanted to put clowns in the tank, and get rid of the eel, but after I saw the eel I wanted to keep it.

That's what I thought, but it was living with a smal damsel and the damsel has survived. But I guess it's less stress on the fish if I let the Eel go. Snowflake eel soon to be in the San Antonio Reefers section up for sale!

Hi AlexfromSATX,

A 20L tank is a bit small for a snowflake eel they get like 2 feet long (it might take a few years for them to get that big). Just make sure you have a place for him when he out grows your tank. I have heard of them trying to eat triggers but I am sure that your eel is a bit smaller then them. I would not have any fish in the tank with them that are smaller then there mouth or they will be lunch for sure.

This is a good forum for eel info.

Hope that helps, best of luck with your eel they are real cool

My LFS is willing to take the inhabitants of this tank, I really just wanted the tank and the 25 Lbs of tonga branch rock, but as a bonus he is throwing in a 1x96w PC Retrofit and Pulsing Xenia and a few red shrooms. SO, I think I am going to just try and put everything in this system and go with a 20L as my main tank w/ fish and coral and move my Pod to work. Thanks for that link, It's almost a 50/50 shot of the eel eating fish, so I just won't gamble with it.
