I am wondering what type of snail that is in the pic with the clown? I have a tons of those and they mutiply quite a bit. They seem to love algae and move at a very rapid rate. I have been wondering what they are for 6+ months.

Cerith Snail (Cerithium sp.) - No trunk.

Or

Nassarius Snail (Nassarius sp.) - Has a "trunk"

Well, the hobby as we know it, refers to them as either one of the above names that I posted (and then some).

I take dr rons info with a grain of salt.

You are entitled to your own opinion and views. :)

But thanks for posting.

You're quite welcome. (back at ya kid) :gen9:

Check out the operculum! A cerith's shell isn't shaped like the posted picture, and the cerith's operculum is rounded as is the foot. Nass snails have a very long foot and granted, the operculum is similarly shaped, but the shell isn't whorled enough. Columbellids tend to have a more "smooth" look to it's shell, with the crown portion spiraled. Also, note the lack of trunk. Nass have a trunk, columbellids don't. A shot of that snail from the top side would be great.

Cerith - http://www.reefcorner.com/SpecimenSheet ... hSnail.htm
Pretty little nass snails - http://www.fishtanksandponds.net/live-s ... snail1.htm

Cadeucsb could shed more light onto this discussion with some more info about where he got the snail and perhaps provide us with some more detailed pictures.

FWIW, I ordered some of those strombus grazers from IPSF a few years ago and they look exactly like that guy above.

Your turn! :sport

It's not either of these.

Ceriths have longer, narrower shells.

Nassarius snails have a longer shell with more numerous deep grooves, and they mainly stay under the sandbed, so coral wouldn't have a chance to attach to the shell.

It looks more like a turbo snail, or margarita snail to me. It doesn't have the stripes that are generally on a nerite.

Definitely not a turbo B. They have more of a circular shell as does the margarita typically sold in the hobby.

Turbo - http://www.reefcorner.com/SpecimenSheet ... _snail.htm and http://www.saltreef.com/images/turbosnail3.jpg I also took a pic of one of mine that I'll upload in a few.

Margarita snail. These are actually a tempterate species of snail that are sold in the hobby. They are in the same family as nerites, with the usual rounded shape to the shell. Surprisingly, I have one that has lived a lot longer than it has been reported that they live in a reef system with the warmer temps. Mine is almost 3 years old. It's somehwere in the rockwork of the cube, so I couldn't get a shot of it, but here's what is sold - http://species.fishindex.com/species_25 ... snail.html

I have a nerite as well, got a shot of him too.

Okay, here's a shot of my turbo and my checkered nerite. Not the greatest turbo shot but it had woken from it's nap and was turning the corner of the cube to work the back glass. Can't get a decent shot back there.

This is really neat to read on as there doesnt seem to be much known about them. Mine seem to breed quite a bit in my little ten. I am happy now. Thanks again. :)

Without seeing the otherside of the shell, I can step back and safely say that I am unsure of it's exact type.

However, my previous post will stand in my opinion on best guess.

Snails that small look very similar and going by the shell really doesn't do much as they vary from locale to locale.

It's anyones guess unless you can see the little guy up close and personal.

We agree on at least one thing. I'm hoping cadeucsb will show up and offer a few more pics.

Going to MACNA Kris?

Hell no!

1- I don't know where it's at and I am sure it's too far away and I don't fly.
2- I am liable to be shot, stabbed or beat. I have a dark reefing past.
3- It would be a long lonely trip. Nobody to go with and going alone would be boring as hell.

Other than that, I would go :D

Just outside of DC in Crystal City, VA.

Yes, I know. You tend to attract that sort of response from people.

Anonymity has it's up-sides. :cool1:

It's settled then, you're going.

Really, it's in Crystal City? Damn, thats not far at all.

However, with you asking me about it in the first place - raises some suspicions. :)

Hmmm.

Dunno if I will go tho. Seems like it would be boring.

Suspicions? Are you one who thinks there's an evil plot against you? Someone who may be out to get you from your deep dark past? Really...?

Crystal City is about 2 hours from you. Not far at all. Go on Sunday when all the trade show vendors are selling off all their goods. Deep discounts are a-plenty from what I hear.

Holy $%*$...when did you turn 26?

Dunno. I don't think I will go. I think there is a plot brewing. Besides, when is it?

Umm, been 26 since July 5th :) You ask that as if I was 10 yesterday.

LOL.....I just realized I was looking at the wrong pic.
Sorry Kris. I was looking at this pic.

Not this one.

I can see why you'd guess cerith or nassarius.

I'm still sure it isn't a nassarius. They have a much longer flatter foot when they're out of the sandbed.

I looked around on the normal sites and didn't see anything for sale that looked like it. Finally I started poking around on this page.

http://www.gastropods.com/Taxon_pages/Common_Names.html

The closest things I saw to it was something like this.

Parametaria macrostoma
http://www.gastropods.com/5/Shell_4095.html

It's under the dove shell page.

B - tired of looking at shells.

Hehe. Not a problem. Miscommunication :)

I am not sure about that snail. I have some myself and always classified them as cerith or whatever I posted. I do have nass. as well and they do have a longer foot.

I guess the real question is, where is that guys head/antennaes? They should be sticking out.

Whoever owns that picture, could you take some more shots of that snail? Maybe in a white dish in a couple of different views?

Thanks!
