---ANOTHER ENIGMA---

The directions with my 24gl Nano Cube strongly suggested to remove the bio balls and ceramic ring bag from the filtration if live rock was going to be used. Why?? Can you have to much biological filtration. I did not think you could have to much biological filtration. The only thing I could figure was that to many nitrates would cause an algae bloom. But that is why you must do water changes.

Does anyone have any idea!!

Your help is great. Thanks!

The Bioballs and ceramic rings create way too many nitrates. The LR processes the nitrites slower allowing a more natural bio filtration. I would remove the bio balls and ceramic rings and use the live rock. JMO.

i agree with Tim...and welcome to the site.

There are actually timed when certain filter medias can lead to higher nitrates...those are inproperly maintained filter floss, and things like the above mentioned "biological" medias. LR has the advantage over these medias in that it supports aerobic bacteria at the surface, and also houses anaerobic bacteria inside the rock. Those ceramic beads are too pourous to really house the highly beneficial anaerobic bacterias...and least, this is the way that I have come to understand this issue... I may be wrong.

Yes, I agree with everone above. I took mine out of my 6 gal nanocube.

Welcome to nanotank!

That pretty much has it covered. The media proceesses waste products into nitrates very quickly where using LR is a slower process allowing for a more natural processing of waste which includes your cleaning crew having a chance to get rid of some of the waste before it can be broke down.

:welcome and everyone is right the only thing you need is one sponge and change it every 2-4 days with a clean one and so on and well a good thing to do will be

1st chamber sponge and live rock rubble
2nd chamber chemi-pure (a great kind of carbon better than normal carbon) & LR RUBBLE
3rd chamber heater & pump ...(LR rubble if you wish)

and thats all u need for a great filtration not need all the crap that comes in the chamber thats only a nitrate factory....

Does anyone have a good idea for netting to put the LR ruble in so you can take it out more easily (just in case)?
