Additives? Some Ideas

Hi,

I'm still in the cycling phase of of JBJ 12g Nano (a little over a week now). I have upgraded the hood with the 3.24 Larnie edition. (2 24w JBJ 50/50, 1 24w Actinic, 2 10W T5 Actinic and the R2 moon light. 92w total) I know i'm a ways off but I wanted to start to learn about the different additivies you guys use. ie. Kalkwasser, B-Ionic, Stronium, Iodine, etc. What are "must use" additives and how much do you dose in a 12g Nano. I just hope to get some general information on the entire dosing subject. I'd like to have as much knowledge as possible as I get closer to adding softies and livestock. Thanks! I'm sure I'll get some educated responses from you guys/gals on this subject.

I use kalk, kent liquid calcium and kent iodine, but before you dose anything you should be sure to test first.
oh yeah i occasionally have to add magnesium and baking soda.
as to how much that depends on how low your levels are to start with

Is there some reason this is in two forums?

I don't actually dose my 6g nano. However it does get some of what I dose the main reef system with through periodic water changes.

I usually change about a gallon out a week, but it's usually with water from the LFS. About once a month or so I use a gallon of reef water from the home tanks.

The home tanks get, calcium, iodine, strontium, magnesium, sometimes kalkwasser, through the top-off tank. I don't have a real strict schedule. I try to do a water test once a month as long as everything looks healthy/happy. I add stuff to the top-off water based on those readings.

Incysor,

I posted it in the general forum and then I realized I wanted to post it in the beginners form. No big deal....right?

I wouldn't make a habit of posting the same thread multiple times...You'd be surprised how irate and picky people on RC and nano-reef can be. I actually got flamed early on for asking a question about keeping clams and posting the same question to three different boards. I posted it on RC, and hadn't gotten any responses in a few hours, so I posted it on nano-reef, and while I was at it posted it on reefs.org. I ended up getting flamed for the question itself on RC, and got flamed on the other two for posting the same question on the other boards. No, it's not a big deal, just trying to keep you from having the same kind of wonderful experience.

What you dose with will depend on what your tank needs. You may be able to maintain perfect water parameters with water changes alone. I would wait until you have your tank stocked and do some testing before just randomly starting to add different supplements. JMO, Skip
