I've had the Red Sea Prizm protein skimmer on my tank for over a year and a half now. Its been great so far but my only complaint was that it doesn't skim all the crud off the surface of the water. Red Sea sells a upgrade kit which is basically just the surface skimmer attachment for like $35 but I thought I could improve the design. I've also heard from people that bought it that they couldn't ever tweak the skimmer to actually produce skimmate after they added the upgrade. I originally had a Fluvial surface skimmer hooked up to the Prizm but just about every day, my skimmer lost its suction and the thing was just bobbing on top of the water doing absolutely nothing. So one day I got out the saw and gave it a whirl...
I happened to find at work a few charcoal colored pen holders that looked like the right size for the surface skimmer. I cut inch and a half slits on two of the four sides and found a mini c-clamp to hold it in place.
Then I cut with a handsaw the last little 1" piece from the Prizm to give it some clearance from the pen holder.
I c-clamped it to the corner of my tank and started up the skimmer and it works great! I've had it running for about 3 days now and I've got perfectly clear surface water and the prizm is still producing a nice dark green skimmate. Best thing I've ever done.
Any questions, just ask.
