6 g vs. 12 g (deluxe) nanos?

Hello all,
I am just getting started with the salt-water experience and don't have much to spend. Should I purchase a 6 gallon nano or a 12 gallon (and is the 12 deluxe worth it)?

I am looking to set-up a simple reef system, with a couple of hardy fish. Is the 6 g too small?

Thanks for any info.

I have both the 6 gallon and 12 DX and like them both. The main advantage to the 12 DX is that it has much better lights. I know the watt per gallon thing doesn't mean much but the 6 has 3 wpg and the 12 DX has 4 wpg just as a comparison. This means you will be able to keep more light loving corals in the DX without having to make any upgrades to the lighting. I also think that if you just have one tank the 6 may be restrictive as to what you can keep due to size where this is not as much of a problem with the 12. Try to make a list of all of the livestock you want to keep, corals, fish and inverts, and then post it here and you can get some recommendations as to whether everything is appropriate and the tank size you need. With this information in hand you can then make an informed decision as to the tank you buy. HTH, Skip

I too own the 12 gallon DX, and the 6 Gallon JBJ. The 12 gallon is stock and that's my girlfriend's tank. The 6 gallon is mine, and because of the lighting issue, and other reasons of mine, I upgraded my lights, and with a slight mod of my own, I upped it to 61 watts. 54 watts mod from nanocustoms, and I with the help of my bro, added in the 7 watt fuge light.

The only problem is, I think the 6 gallon hood mod came out too prematurely (IMO) as there are some design problems/complications, that either you will overlook or you may not. I haven't heard any complains about the 12 gallon mods and 24 gallon mods though. I have a post about my experience with having my 6 gallon modded out (it's in nano 20 and under category)

Good luck with your purchase, I think if you go with the 12, you shouldn't encounter any problems, and if you mod it out in the future, I think that should go smoothly as well.
