400W HPS

I have a 400W High Pressure Sodium lamp from my greenhouse and was wondering if HPS bulbs are used in reef keeping. I understand that HPS is for flowering and MH is for growth, but couldn't I use it anyway? It'd look great above my 29g.

The spectrum is usually all wrong with the HPS lamps and that is why you dont see them being used on reef tanks. MH have a totally different spectrum...actually there are about 5 different main spectrums (6500k, 10000k, 14000k, 15000k, 20000k) available and those main spectrums vary from lamp to lamp. The HPS I would guess to be somewhere in the 2500k-3000k area??? Just not appropriate... and the spectrum isnt "full" enough either.

I hope that helps and :welcome to nanotank.com!

Thanks for clearing that up Jesse, you've been very helpful. I guess I'll keep that in the greenhouse where it belongs.
