20 watts=100w? PC wattage confusion for 10 gallon HELP

I'm really confused. I don't understand when people say they need or have a certain amount of wattage- is this the actual energy used by the PC or the equvilant light emitted. For example, I have a 10 gallon with srooms, leathers, zoas, etc (but we would like to keep LPS) lighted by one coralife 20 watt mini compact florescent and one 20 watt regular (marine light) florescent. does this mean I have 40 watts or 120? (because the PC is equivalent to 100 watts output). Also, is 40 watts enough for LPS, what if i put them very close to the top of the tank- then would that be enough for LPS? thanks for solving my wattage quandary, I looked everywhere but could not figure out if its the used wattage or output equivalent. THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!

40watts...i think, im not an expert in this department. i am running 96w over my ten gallon. coralife makes the fixture im using, its a quad bulb. i dont think 40w would be enough for LPS. hopes this helps.

thanks- but why do people say PC are better than tube lights if the same energy used (20 watts) equals the same output?? I thought 20 watt PC is equivilant to 100 watts regular, at least thats what it says on the box.. can you help me with this??

Because the wattage is only one measure, and it's not a very useful one.

PAR is the most useful measurement, and PC lamps generally have a higher PAR value, and they penetrate deeper than normal fluorescent bulbs do.

We've been discussing this frequently lately. Here's a couple recent threads.
