2 week old 9 gallon

Hey everyone I'm new to the site but not to the hobby. I'm 21 and have worked at 2 different pet stores since i was 13. However, that is just my hobby while school is my real "Job". I do my research to ensure I know what's going on but everyone has different advice. It seems to me that you guys know what you are talking about. So please feel free to point me in the right direction.

So far i have a 9 gallon cube with a skilter 250. I did the whole limewood modification and it seems to be working quite well. I also have a 24W 50/50 power compact. About 20 pounds of cured liverock. And have used R.O. water with my salinity at 1.022, using Instant Ocean. Black Tahitian sand was used.

It has been running for about 1 1/2 weeks now and the nitrate tested at about 80-90, 100 being the highest on the scale. Nitrites were a dark purple. Still not quite off the chart though. Ammonia was down to about 1.0, in a 1-10 scale. This morning I was given 2 red leg hermits to take care of the brown hair algae. Which they already have been eating non-stop.

With all that said, what should I do next? Eventually when everything gets perfect, I would like to put a sea apple in eventhough everyone said it will be difficult. I would also like to to basically cover the live rock in Zoaithids. Thanks for reading all of that, and I look forward to anyones advice.

Well I am newer to the hobby, but it just sounds like your tank is still cycling. Turn off the lights and wait it out. I've never used a skilter but I would not run the skimmer of put any of the media in until the cycle was complete. Just my two cents.

Too soon to be adding live stock. You really should wait until Nitrites and ammonia are zero or you risk killing or at least greatly stressing your crabs which can lead to sickness and disease.

In my 95 gallon I put in all my live rock in before i even put the water in the tank, and i glued it down with this foamy stuff. I can't remember the name. Every thing was fine 2 1/2 weeks she cycled i added 3 turbo snails and some snails and a few hermit crabs, then around the 5 week mark i put 3 fish in the tank. I had no problems with cycling!
