2 out of 3 of my tanks crashed

Hi guys,

I just got back from Mexico today,

When I got back my 30G FOWLR was in bad shape the salt was real high and 3 snails died in the tank and the autofeeder fell in to the skimmer (It smelled so bad) :doc

All the Nitrite was a bit high and the Nitrate was over 20. I did a 60% water change and all the fish are still ok. I sure hope the tank is ok (I love my fish and hope they make it) I will check again tonight.

My Nano tank was in bad shape to half the coral was dead and it smelled real bad. :cryinga: I moved all the good coral to my other tank and took this one down. I am not too sure if I will bring it back up with saltwater it is too much work.

I guess next time I will find someone better to look after my fish tanks.

I am not too happy right now :cryinga: but what can you do it happens.

sorry for your losses
Keep up the water changes after the 60% IMHHO I would change about 15-20% every 2 days or so till it stablizes again If you can save your corals by moving them to pristine tank conditions like your 30 that you are working on saving you maybe able to save some of your corals .......so here is what I would do and this is just me....
A; do an inital h20 change largish in size 50-60%
B; second filter with an addtional unit chemipure
C; keep the filters cleaned and changed /rinsed
D; move the remaining live corals to the larger tank for care
E; every 2-3 days a small water change for 1-2 weeks keeping extra water to do larger changes if need be and run tests on your tank, to keep an eye on your perameters .....
F; feed very lightly
keep us posted on your progress

Sadie has outlined a good plan. If you have any corals that are receding you can frag the good part before it gets affected. Keep an eye on things and have some extra water mixed just in case you need it.

that is such a hard thing to come home to...i lost 90% of my corals, one of my two fishes, and some of my inverts while I was away on my honeymoon....not fun.

Hopefully you will recover quickly.

Sorry to hear that Eric! How long were you gone? Any idea what caused the crash in the Nano? Follow Sadies outline.

It is very sad to come home from a nice vacation and find problems.

More times then not, I have come home to some type of problem with my tanks. Usally the person you pick is shaking their head yes at everything you ask or tell them. You leave feeling good and know everything will be fine.....

You return to a real mess and think to yourself,"how could I have been so stupid to trust this person with my tanks"..... :)

Thanks guys,

I was only gone for 8 days.

The 30G looks like to salt got to high. I am going to build an auto top off for next time and get a top of the line auto feeder or setup a live food system.

The Nano could have been a lot of things the salt was not that high. It more or less had an airtight lid. I think I am going to go with a bigger tank next time, if something goes wrong on such a small tank it does not take long to have a big problem.

Thanks for all your in put.

I went camping a few months ago and my stupid Aquaclear filter leaked, dripped on my surge protector, tripped my breaker, which then turned off power to my tank (no lights, powerheads, heater) for 2 days. It also left my fridge off and ruined all my food. Killed about 60% of my corals in my 5.5 gallon tank.

I know how you feel. That sucks buddy. Hang in there and start over. I ended up buying a 6 gallon nanocube.

Eric,

Hi Eric. I think the real problem is that you didn't have a trusted friend or relative checkup on your tank when you were on vacation in Mexico. I wouldn't trust automatic feeders, timers, etc. Before going on vacation you could show them how to feed the coral, fish, etc. Just make sure you tell them underfeeding is safer then overfeeding, and show them how to feed.

It's kind of a catch 22. Will the take do better on its own (maybe a light timer), use a feed timer, or use a friend or relative that feeds the inhabitants while your out? All three choices can have dreadful consenquenses.

I took down my Nano tank and I am selling off all the living coral, I thru out all the dead stuff it was white and had no color.

My 30 FOWLR tank is all back to good. I am going to sell off the bigger fish and make this one a seahorse tank + fish tank. I am also going to get rid off all my snails and just stick to hermit crabs (I think that was one of the problems, they get turned over and die)

I was going to use my 10G as a seahorse tank. I think I am just going to tank it down and save it for a QT.

I am just going to stick with one tank for now and stay away from coral for now. I might build a new tank next winter (most likely a 12G Nanocube).

Thanks for all your input.

sorry to hear that Nemo
you may choose to try some nasserite (sp) snails that burrow and climb rock as well as the glass

Cerith snails usually will go on the glass, rockwork and sandbed. Nassarious snails are mainly sandbed unless you get the n. obsoletas which IME stay mainly on the glass.

Sounds like cerith snails to me, they are the ones with an elongated shell that comes to a point and do not get to be very big around.
