Has anyone ever done a 150 watt hqi mod into a nanocube 12 hood. Can someone list the pros and cons? difficulty level. and simply just yes or no becuase i wanted to do a 70 watt mh but its a lot easier to find 150 watt bulbs/ parts and their the same price. PLus if i were to do it.. how much would the lamp holders cost? are there some floodlgihts with sufficant lamp holders for 150 watt?

Scratch that idea because of the heat issues. The JBJ was poorly designed in heat exchange and traps too much heat. Even with just stock lighting you can have heat issues of 86 to 87 degrees...

i already had that fun durring the summer. Think i might take the hood off and gut the PCs out and create a retro pendant maybe.. thanks mike

I wouldnt think it is impossible. nanotuners.com has them i believe. Eddy has (2)24 watt pc's AND a 70 watter in his 12g nc and he doesnt even need his chiller. He does, however had something like 6 fans installed in his lid.

I think that you should consider something like Eddy's (Edgray) combo hood as opposed to the single 150 watter. The color combination of the actinic pc's with a mh lamp can be very nice.

If you were set on the single 150 watter, you should probably consider a separate MH fixture of some type and hang it or use legs over your nc. Going topless would be much more practical.

However, IME, a single MH lamp over any tank just doesnt do your corals justice nor does it give you the color options of running a combo system.

Well no experience with a 150w MH just with the 70w MH but a friend that gave me alot of infor on MH in nanocubes hoods told me that the heat that 150w produce is the double or even worst than a 70W but well is up to you really can be done but will need a bunch of fans and a chiller (chiller might not help that much but at least will cool your water 1-3 degrees) and well i dont have heating issues at all since inside the hood are 2 minifans blowing air in direction to the MH bulb and 2 fans taking the hot air out of the hood and other fan cooling the chiller ill show a pic even though in pic shows a diferent setup is cause i took out one fan out and put the 2minifans to blow the bulb... PLUS i have in the feeding door 2 fans blowing the water to make it cooler. and not even on summer time i had heating issues and well is not that hard to find the 70W bulbs really the only thing is that the choices on brands are short but USHIO & AQUALINE have good reputation and make good bulbs... you can get fixtures & bulbs of 70w at nanotuners.com or ILLUMING.COM. by the way no matter what MH you get you always have to cut the splashguard i mean the part under the MH bulb so it doesnt melt the splashguard you can see that in my splashguard in my mod pic..

SO WELL is upto you what you do but a hand on 150w will be nice but will lose the nanocube look ;-) ..

ok here is my hood pic

and a link of what i follow to do my DIY.. this will give you an idea of what i did and what you could do.

HOPE THIS HELPS.

Well the only reason i was thinking about it was availibility Im in canada so as soon as i order from nanotuners or such the cost almost doubles with duties and taxes and its just not worth it. I can get a balast and everything here but cant find Bulbs anywhere!!!!! reason why i havent bought nething. Thus why i was thinking the 150 because i can go to my lfs and get a 150 watt bulb there. SO no idea what to do might just leave it and see what i can do with stock lighting. I found a great diy skimmer on nano-reef i dont no if you guys have seen it but if you havnt msg me and ill send you the link

Reefermike,

It's more cost effective to get one of the Vipers that marinedepot.com sells. I think you will save with zero taxes just pay for shipping.

You will not have enclosed heat issues because it's a hang over the tank and since you mentioned ditching the hood this one seems to work.

I would go with the 150 MH at 20K if they offer it...

Alright thanks. Just looking into options right now. I mean if im taking off the hood then i might as well pass up the cube and use a smaller tank that i have .. thats the issue really. Im tempted to just ditch the DC and go with a 20 square tank that i have and do what i want from there. Simply put theres jsut to many options. :cryinga:

OK well i think i decided what im going to do.. If i can get 24 watt pcs from the guy that supplies everything for me then ill get them from him or else i am going to order from Nanocustoms the diy 2 x 24 watt pc. And i actully have a question. Are the 24 watt and the 36 watt bulbs the same length?

ah ha i thought so lol we any ways .. which would you (anyone) prefer... the diy kit 4.24 or jsut the 2x 24 watt and ballast ? WHich way would you go. In the end its either double the price or half the price, for me here in canada at least.
