I too have used several different salt mixes before with varying results, the biggest thing I suggest to people is to not only get a salt that works well in your system but to get a saltmix that is readily available in your area. You never know when something will happen and you need to run out...

You could get a small hang on overflow just for the UV, not the prettiest option but this would keep from making big changes in your system. Just another thought to ponder.

With a trigger crabs, shrimp, and snails will be known as snackfoods. Pretty neat fish but hard on the cleaning staff.

the pods are indeed very good. I have heard some people say some hermits will eat cyano however I have never observed this. They should help in keeping the sandbed stirred up some and the cyano broken up though.

I would also add to Sadies post that a diatom bloom is a normal part of a new tank and nothing to be alarmed with.

I hear what your saying and agree that its hard to change our way of thinking but I have seen so much progression in the hobby since I was hooked change seems normal to me. I too started with a home built wet/dry and NO fluorescent lighting, reefing has come a long way since the early days.......

I agree that it may be a part of the new tank syndrome so I would try natural methods like Sadie described before trying any chemical methods. The reduced photo period and increased flow will hopefully control this pest.

As much as I hate to see it come to this I wish you the best of luck in eradicating your ich problem. As nice as SPS reefs look I do think they are better suited for tanks with few or no fish. I think an LPS or even a softy tank will look fantastic once you put your magic touch on it. Good...

Maybe we should have a written guideline to follow. Maybe we could get a list of participants and draw names to pair off and then come to an agreement about what will be swapped. I am not sure what the easiest way to do this would be.

You will have to do several water changes to get your nitrates back down but as Sadie mentioned you could start now, I think you have enough nitrites to keep the cycle going with no ill effects from a water change.

Using LR for your biofilter is still a biofilter, its just not as fast as using a traditional wet/dry styled filter. What I am recommending is to let nature use as much of the waste as possible BEFORE it gets cycled into nitrates which are undesireable. The less foodstuff that is processed...
