I am so happy to hear that they are so willing to take the extra step to make sure that you are happy with their product instead of just worrying about making a sale. I have always admired their tanks but there is no one in my area that stocks acrylic tanks. I guess they just are not as...
One thing that needs to be pointed out to you is that refractometers need to be calibrated from time to time, if your LFS doesn't calibrate theirs properly they may also be giving you a false reading. The water you are talking about from Petco if I am not mistaken is Catalina Water, it is not...
You can use a 300, there is just more room in a 500. I currently have an AC 300 on my 10 gallon. You will need to use a smaller impellar though, mine has the original in it and it has too much flow inside the filterbox. I plan on ordering a smaller ompellar with my next on-line order.
I don't know alot about sponges but here is what I do know. You have to keep them submerged at all times, if they are exposed to air for even a few seconds air will become trapped in their cells and cause them to die. They are filter feeders but I think cyclopeeze is a bit big for them to eat...
It is my understanding that lava rock is reef safe, anything that may have been in it has been rendered inert by the heat. I used lava rock in place of liverock in a dwarf seahorse tank with no ill effects, in fact with some of the colors on the rock it looked very much like mature LR.
With the kit you are talking about you will also need to either buy the 3.18 heat shield or mod your current heatshield in order to fit the three bulbs under the hood. You will also need to order a ballast for the third bulb, your current ballast is located under the heatshield and has to be...
You can always get a growout tank and have the Viper over it just to get them to multiply for trading or whatever and use the PC tank for a display tank.
Nice tank to upgrade into. You will have alot of fun getting this task completed, plus look at all of the room for more goodies and automation. Do I see a protien skimmer, calcium reactor, ozone, controllers, chiller, etc. in the future maybe?
I am thinking along similar lines to Eddy. Use the polyfilter as s ponge to trap particulate matter as well as to grab onto unwanted pollutants like copper and other metals. I wouldn't use the phosphate remover unless you need it though.
They still work too fast and end up being nitrate factories. Bio balls by design are meant to be aerobic and the ones that have water trickled over them are even more aerobic than the submerged ones. They should be removed.
I really like your plumbing job, everything has it own little area. If I didn't know anything about reefing I would probably be overwhelmed by the amount of PVC and all of the different compartments. Its easy to tell that there is quite a bit of thought put into this set-up.
That is similar to one of the ideas I have running around in my head. This is a DIY top-off that uses the same priciple as the no longer available Nurce system. I have found a nurce that I may purchase from another reefer local to me. I am also thinking of using the battery powered top-off I...
