Its corals and sensitive inverts that need the frequent water changes, fish can usually tolerate much higher nitrate levels with no ill effect.

Help... new 10 gallon, set up.

You would start a cycle because only the sand near the surface is covered with AEROBIC bacteria, there is anerobic bacterias growing in the lower levels and they will dieoff when disturbed, this will end up causing a cycle.

    Filter socks

I think I would go o soap and use a potscrubber setting or the longest wash. Dishwashers heat the water pretty hot and maybe thats enough. They should be clean even if they are still stained.

    SCARED OF LIGHT!

If you use the pendant it will be easier to control your light by adjusting the height of the fixture. IMO it will also be easier to use with the striplight you already have. You may be better off ditching the striplight and going with a 14,000k or higher bulb, you won't need actinics with a...

Help... new 10 gallon, set up.

:welcome to nanotank. Just to clear things up, you can move a small amount of substrate (a cup or so to seed a new sandbed) without causing a cycle. Youy can use the lights you currently have for maintaining the coralline on the LR but it will probably bleach when you put bigger lights on the...

    Filter socks

I have heard of people putting them in the washing machine and the dishwasher before. I just soak them in a bucket of bleach water then rinse the heck out of them and put dechlorinator in the last rinse then allow them to thoroughly dry before using.

    www.illuming.com A+++

Thank alot for the heads up. I have seen their ads before but was hesitant to place an order. I keep thinking about building a nano with a 70 watt MH over it, I'lll keep this company in mind when it comes time to buy lights.

I had the problem with one of my fish "going over the wall", I simply laid a ruler acrossed the top of the wall so it was balanced and hung over about 3/4" over on each side which was enough to keep the fish in the main tank. I have been hearing really mixed reviews on the Fission skimmer, I...

I really like the Salifert kits myself, they seem to be the easiest to read alot of the time (especially the pH).

    SCARED OF LIGHT!

Here is a list of the more common abbreviations used in the hobby: http://www.nanotank.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=23 . If you have more questions feel free to ask them. You have already overcome one of the first hurdles in deciding your lighting, you have a plan on what you want to keep in the...

    power filter help

If you have room for the filter go ahead and use it. Since this tank is going to be a FOWLR you can use the filter the way it is designed to be used, you don't have to worry as much about nitrates in a FO. It will also add some additional current to the tank and if you would like you can add...

Do you have any agitation of the water surface? You may not be getting good oxygen exchange which takes place only at the waters surface. If your return has a nozzle of some kind that can be aimer point it towards the waters surface enough so that you can see some surface agitation. You could...

Bicolor Blenny picking my Crocea Clam

You can try to feed the blenny a bit more and see if you can keep his tummy full enough so he won't be interested in the clam, you need to be careful that he eats all the food put in the tank so you don't start having a nitrate problem though.

Take a sample of the sand you have and allow it to dry out, then pour a small amount of white vinegar on the sand. If the vinegar fizzes then you have aragonite sand, if it doesn't do anything then you need to find aragonite sand. Most LFS should either carry or be able to get aragonite sand...

    Nudibranch?

As everyone has already made it clear most nudibranches/sea slugs are not ideal candidates for an aquarium, unfortunately their bright colors and neat markings are what make them attractive to the aquarium trade. There are three that are okay IMO to use and they are the ones that eat flatworms...

Actually oxygenating (aerating) the water raises the pH due to excess co2 being released which causes the pH to drop.

    Acrylic or Glass?

There are pros and cons with each but glass wins hands down IMO for a reeftank, there are just too many ways an acrylic tank can get scratched up in a reeftank.
