I am glad you were able to trace down the source of the problem.

    Ooh.. la mer!

Those are some great looking pics, I have thought about purchasing a housing for my camera just to take pics like that. Good story about the dive trip, I am very glad it turned out the way it did. Things could have been very bad.

    explosion of copepods and snails

Copepods are a definate good thing, they act to feed other things in your tank and they also help clean up leftover food and other waste in the tank. On the snails that depends on what knd of snails they are, chances are they are also a good thing but I can't say with 100% confidence since I do...

Ditto about the conch, they are only suitable for very large aquariums. :welcome to the board!

    bullying fire gobie

It kinda sounds like you may have a pair of males that are fighting over territory. I have heard that adding one or two more will stop the squabbling or maybe you could try trading the meaner one in and hopefully get one with a sweeter disposition.

    RO/DI Unit set up

What exactly are you wanting to know about the set up? It is definately worth having RO/DI water for your make up water and water changes.

    Temps are running high!

I would check both the filter and the powerhead and make sure that both of them are turning freely, calcium build-up and plain old gunk can build up in them making the motor have to work harder to get them to pump which will cause them to produce more heat.

    Protein Skimmer...

I too think a sponge in the bubble trap would help.

    WOULD THIS WORK?

:welcome to the board! Your plan sounds pretty good but as mentioned you want the tank running smoothly for at least 6 months before trying to add an anemone. You also didn't mention what kind of lighting you have, an anemone needs very high lighting in order to survive.

OLD DEAD and DRIED Live Rock...?

One thing I want to point out from a similar past experience, if the rock was ever in a tank that was treated with copper there is still residual copper in the LR. I got some old dried out rock like you describe and added it to some LR from a smaller tank and let the whole thing run its cycle...

    JBJ...nano replacement bulbs..

I know someone that bought replacement bulbs from www.nanotuners.com and they said the color was much better than the original 50/50 bulbs. The ones he bought were a 10,000k and an actinic.

AquaMedic 9 gallon Nano Wave, reviews?

I heard someone talking about the skimmer that comes with it and they said it worked well. I would like to see one inperson but would probably buy one if I were in the market based on AquaMedics reputation.

I have witnessed the same type of behaviour in other softies, xenia is just one example.

    led moonlight idea

I recently read a thread somewhere where another reefer did the same thing, I think it helps the tank look more evenly lit.

    Removal of the bio-balls

As long as your LR was fully cycled then the removeal of the bio-balls shouldn't pose a problem. You may want to run ammonia, nitrite and nitrate tests to make sure that you do not have a mini cycle going on and if the levels start getting to high then do a waterchange to get them back down.

    Blennies, Gobies.....

If all you are looking for is a sandbed janitor then I would recommend nassarious snails, they bury themselves in the sandbed until they smell food and then they come out like night of the living dead or something.

    salt

What is available at your LFS? I usually use either Instant Ocean or Oceanic because these are readily available in my area. I am also working on a breeding project where I am using Catalina Water from Petco which is a filtered natural seawater.
