I'm not sure what the bad Viper reviews say, but I bought mine used and have been using it for over a year. It works great. :-)

I keep my Viper about 4" above the water. This seems to be high enough to keep it from getting much salt spray and low enough to get maximum effect from the bulb. I keep a fan blowing between the fixture and the water surface so heat is not a problem.
