Photos you would have submitted to the current contest...

Here are my newest (and only) fish. Evidently they are a pair and they LOVE their mushroom. They are not even 2" long. I finally moved my 5 gallon nano into a 10 gallon though. I also think I am going to just keep softies and these two guys.

    PC, T5, or VHO

Last year I had a freshwater tank in there and the temp was 82 with the heater unplugged. I know how bad temp swings are, and I probably will do a freshwater tank with some fish that like warm water if the custodian can't get the temp stable. It's not humid here so the fan idea could work. I...

    PC, T5, or VHO

Metal halide isn't really an option because of heat and especially cost. I don't want to go over $150 for the lighting. Thanks for the input. I will look into the Tek T5s. Shaggydoo, you are correct, it does get warm in my classroom. I am going to talk to the custodian before I do this...

    PC, T5, or VHO

I have a 5 gallon nano that I just started and I love it! Now I want a 20 gallon at work. I have the tank already, it's a 20 high. (24" x 12" x 16") Now I am trying to figure out what light I want for it. I am looking at a Current USA 4x24w HO T-5 fixture or a 2x65w Power Compact fixture. I...

    Need help stocking tank

Do you have live rock in there? Do you have a cleaning crew yet? How much light? Whatever you do, add it slowly. Add some stuff and wait another few weeks. Add something else, then wait a while. Patience is the name of the game with saltwater.

    Yay! It's cycled!

It took 4 weeks. My freshwater tanks all take 3 weeks or less. I even got an established sand bed from someone, and cured live rock from two someones. Ammonia and nitrite are at 0 now and nitrate is low (I don't remember what though). The LFS guy that tested the water told me it was ok to...

    Yay! It's cycled!

Well, my 5G nano is finally cycled. I have cycled many freshwater tanks, but this was a different experience. It took a lot longer than fresh, but it also had ammonia spike, but not really any nitrite spike. Anyway, I think I am ready to add some stuff. Question time: 1. Should I...

    What are these?

I found some new critters. can anyone ID them for me? The worm is against the plastic in the sand and the red thing is just attached to the side of the tank.

    First SW tank ever

Alright, here is my 5g nano tank. It is my first time doing a salt water setup, so we'll see what happens. I got live rock and some sand that were both from a couple different tanks. No cleanup crew or fish yet. Here is what I have so far: 5G flat back hex acryllic tank 2 x 24w JBJ Power...

    Live Rockscaping

I read somewhere that when setting up your live rock, you don't want to let it touch the sides of the aquarium. Why is this? In my freshwater tanks I stack rock against the glass quite often. Also - I got some feather dusters on the rock I bought. Do I need to feed them or anything? There...

    Set up order

Ok, I did it. I think this means I am totally committed now. I got it up and running today. I bought a little powerhead, a hydrometer, salt, and a small chunk of live rock. It is up and running as I type. Now here's a question... When I bought the live rock the LFS guy just put it in a bag...

    Set up order

I will do weekly water changes - I do that in my other tanks anyway. What didn't you like about that skimmer? It's good to hear the opinion of someone who has used it. Good to know that I don't "need" it. Less money expenditure is good. :)

    Set up order

At what point do I need to get the skimmer? I do have 2 small HOB filters that I can run for some flow. until I get skimmer and powerhead.

    Set up order

Ok, I want a 5 gallon nano reef, but I don't know what order to do this in... I have the tank, heater, and a HOB filter, and the lights (JBJ 2x24W CF) are in the mail. A friend is going to give me some live rock and live sand when I am ready for it. I plan on purchasing a Current USA...

    Ages? Occupation? Pics?

This is my first post here... I am a salt newbie (so new that the tank's not even set up yet!), but I have been going crazy with fresh water for a couple years now. I have 12 tanks and keep mostly African cichlids of various varieties. I have a West African biotope, a Lake Malawi biotope, 2...
