My cleaner shrimp is trying to entice my pair of Clowns...

My cleaner shrimp is definitely trying to set up a cleaning station, near the area where my clowns hang out. But the clows are ignoring him. They are captive bred clowns. Does that mean they don't know that the cleaner shrimp just wants to clean them?

Yellow Watchman Goby & Pistol Shrimp

From what I understand, the Pistol will occupy the sand bed, in his burrow, basically. My cleaner occupies the middle to upper tank regions (he never comes down to the substrate). Hopefully, the two would never meet?

Here's my first attempt at tank photography...

Okay, I guess that didn't work. I put in the URL to the photo. I'll try again... Oh, wow! It worked! Well, here's my Mama Xenia. I have lots of little ones, too. Here's my little orange Ricordia: And here's my Yellow Watchman Goby in his cave, peering out (which is what he does...

Is there any way to feed a sand bed for a Sand Sifting Star?

I really really want a sand-sifting starfish, but my nanoreef tank is only 15 g. There's not enough open sand bed for him to roam in. So I was wondering if it would work if I set up a sand bed only tank (with a few rocks and maybe a couple soft corals) with a sand sifter star or two (?), and...

    knobby star fish

Good advice. I have started taking my Marine ID books with me to the LFS when I go, so I can look things up and read about them while I'm standing there. Unfortunately, some of the books contradict each other, and that doesn't help. I am so amazed at what some LFSs will sell folks. I have...

Yellow Watchman Goby & Pistol Shrimp

I just bought a Yellow Watchman Goby and a very young pistol shrimp. My LFS has a pair of them cohabitating (like Felix and Oscar) in one of the big display tanks. They are very entertaining to watch. I had wanted a Watchman, so I bought one, along with a very small red and white pistol...

    How many inverts

I second the vote for Nassarius snails. They are extremely valuable in that they stir up the sand and keep it healthy and aerated. Plus they are fun to watch. One minute they are there, and then poof! They go sand diving and they're gone in seconds. The only sign of them is their little...

    NC24

aromano, thanks for the model. That's really cool, and it shows very well what you're talking about. So, no glue or epoxy. That sounds good. I don't like the idea of glueing things. I guess I was worrying that the rocks would fall. I do try to find a spot where they sort of wedge in tightly...

    NC24

My tank doesn't look nearly as nice as all the photos I've seen. Mine's a real hodge podge! Maybe because it's so relatively new. I never know where to stick things in it. I go for current and/or light, depending on what coral it is... and it all looks like I'm having a garage sale or something...

Evidence of my Hair Algae attack

I think that advice applies to me as well. My tank is young and hair algae is appearing spreading. I've been feeding live Phytoplankton for feather dusters. Apparently, that's not a good idea this early in a tank's life. I'll cut back significantly on the phyto. I did add three scarlet hermits...

    NC24

Wow! Wonderful photos! I love the Watchman Goby. I got one myself today. They are such little characters. How did you get your rock/corals to look so good? Mine look like a junkyard pile of rubbish. Yours is so vertical. Do you attach/glue/epoxy your corals to the rock? Is that one big rock...

Evidence of my Hair Algae attack

How about using a lawn mower? ;) My hair algae is just starting to take off, and my blue legs don't even make a dent in it. I got three Scarlett hermit crabs today, hoping that will help (someone at the LFS suggested that). I look at my hair algae and think, it's time to mow the grass. Let...

Are my Oscellaris likely to jump?

That's good news, because I really don't want to put the glass canopy back on. They seem to be doing well, although one is definitely a better eater than the other one. Thanks!!

Are my Oscellaris likely to jump?

I have a new pair of young Oscellaris in my 15g. reef tank. Day 2: they are doing well. I like to keep my tank uncovered. Are they likely to jump out? I know some reef fish jump a lot -- what about Oscellaris? Mine seem to stay in the middle to lower regions of my tank. I don't see them going...

What do I do with a broken Xenia stalk? One of mine broke of

Oh, my! That's too funny. I can see it now, crawling all over the rocks. Ouch! That sounds like a good idea, but I can't get past the OUCH factor. I think I'll try the shot glass approach. I have to do it today, cause he's getting blown around. I stuck in a quiet area between two large rocks...

    Does anyone here keep seahorses?

I am in the process of researching the needs of a SHOWLR (seahorse only w/LR) tank and have been reading the forum at seahorse.org. They're scaring me to death over there because many of the young posters know nothing about the requirements for maintaining a marine environment. Some of them have...

    Crap! I have bristleworms!!!

Well, that's what it brought to mind ... all those movies about giant alligators in the sewage systems. I wouldn't want to be responsible for such a catastrophe like that. ;-) Maybe I'll just let the cat eat it after all. (just kidding!!!) I know their bristles sting. No touchie!! Great...

What do I do with a broken Xenia stalk? One of mine broke of

Cool! Now I'm a frag farmer. :D I'll do that. I don't want him to get lost. I love Xenia -- it's a perfect anenome substitute for a woman who's afraid to get stung by a real anenome. Thanks for the suggestion!!

    Crap! I have bristleworms!!!

You are SO evil. But wouldn't that be putting the metropolitan sewage system at great risk?
