Uh oh. I bought a seahorse!

Thanks, guys! So far (know on wood) she is doing well. She is eating enriched frozen mysis shrimp, which is the healthiest food she could eat for her staple diet. There are other goodies I can throw in occasionally as a treat. The jury is out on her species. It's a toss up between H. kuda and H...

Uh oh. I bought a seahorse!

I know the dangers of impulse buying, but I just couldn't help myself. Last night, I was visiting an LFS about an hour away from my house and found a junvenile seahorse in their store. They had no idea what species it is, or whether CB or WC (I'm assuming WC). She came in with four others, who...

    My new babies...

B, what type of Cyclop-eeze do you feed yours? I have found frozen bars online, as well as a freeze-dried powder in a can. Which do you use? I just found a nearby store, Aquarium Adventure, that carries Cyclop-eeze. I'm going there tonight to buy some for my pipes.

    My new babies...

Thanks, B! I have set up a 5 g. culture tank for copepods and have ordered some starter cultures. I will take pics as soon as they get here and I get them in the tank. Until the cultures get going to a critical mass, I will have to buy some pods just to dump in there for them to tide them...

Look at this darling tiny little HOB filter...

Thanks, sadielynn The chemi-pure you mentioned sounds pretty good. I'll try adding some of that to my tanks. I have a freshwater tank that needs some help. It's been up for 3 years, the amonia and nitrates are 0, but the nitrates are off the chart. Nothing ever dies in there, but they have to...

    feeding live food

I'm going to start hatching baby brine shrimp pretty soon, for dwarf seahorses, as that's pretty much the only thing they eat. It's good to decap the shrimp eggs (cysts) before you hatch them. They're eaiser to eat and digest for the fish, and there is far less waste in the water afterward. It's...

Look at this darling tiny little HOB filter...

Right now I have them in a 10g. little reef tank, by themselves. This particular species only gets 2-3 inches long, so I think they'll be okay in a 10g. At first I was going to try the little palm filter, but it is so small, and I like to have as much room for filtration as I can in a HOB...

I just did my first DIY project -- and am I so PROUD!

I know this is child's stuff to you all who are mechanically gifted (which I am not!). Anyway, I needed a HOB filter with a very very slow flow rate (so dwarf seahorse fry don't get sucked into Never Never Land), but all of the ones I tried were too strong for what I needed. So, I read that you...

Please ID the pink worms/snakes/tentacles coming outta rock

Here is a very interesting page on spaghetti worms: http://www.susanscott.net/OceanWatch1998/jan19-98.html I think a spaghetti worm is exactly what I have. My "arms" match what the article says exactly. They are fascinating! Thanks for the ID work, gang! You are amazing!! I learn so...

    My new babies...

I was lucky enough this weekend to pick up a mated pair of African Blue Stripe Pipefish. They are about 2" long (they only get about 2-3" inches long). This is a smaller species of pipefish. I have them in a dedicated 10 g. small reef with one tiny blue leg hermit and several Narssisius (SP?)...

I like the look of those. The small ones don't seem too powerful. I will add one of those. Thanks, Erik!

Is there anything else that makes a sound like pistol shrimp

Erik!!!! That is SO not what I wanted to hear... I think I hear evil laughter ( ) coming from your direction. Great, now I'm going to have nightmares about mantis shrimp... I swear, if a Mantis gets anything in my tank, I will go after it with a sledge hammer. I was at...

2.5 gal tank - newbie here and need help

Well, I'm not very good (yet) as arranging my rocks and corals -- my tank looks like a garage sale!! Some of the folks here have really gorgeous tanks! See the Tank Photography section of this forum for a bazillion photos. Here are a few photos from my tank. They are the first pics I took...

Is there anything else that makes a sound like pistol shrimp

I doubt that I have a mantis shrimp, because I've never lost any fish or anything else, for that matter. I think if I had one, it would have killed something by now. ?? I was just wondering if Mantis shrimps make a noise like a pistol.

Is there anything else that makes a sound like pistol shrimp

I keep hearing pistol shrimp sounds coming from both my marine tanks. I did have a pistol in one tank, but I removed it and took it back to the shop. But I am still hearing the sound, in both of my tanks. Is there anything else that makes that kind of sound? Maybe I'm just losing my mind, but I...

Steven, why would the pads cause an algae problem? I usually do make up my own filter media, mech and chemical.

Look at this darling tiny little HOB filter...

Have you guys seen/heard of these? They are called Azoo Palm Filters. They're tiny little HOB filters with a small compartment for mech/bio/chem filtration. They are designed for really small tanks that need only gentle filtration. I'm going to try one for my pipfish tank... everything else...

    Need some help IDing please...

It looks like a pistol shrimp to me. You'll know for sure if you hear something that sounds like someone knocking a large ring against the glass. Pistols make that sound. Kinda freaky, kinda cool. I've never seen so much stuff come out of rocks. I've never gotten anything but feather...
