Here is a picture of a stometella (Sp?) snail that Skip is refering to. Does it look like this? I've had light colored ones as well as darker ones.

They normally do this if they are stressed. I believe that it is their 'stomach' that they are expelling. Fairly common. They should be back to normal soon.
