I get those all the time and it's weird, but they all seem to show up on the glass at the same time. I think what you are describing are fleas that just appeared out of your sand. There is nothing wrong with them and they will add to your biodiversity. Do they have legs and look like this...

I'm considering buying either a refractometer or a pinpoint pH monitor. Which would you consider to be more useful? and don't say both b/c the cash flow will not allow for both at this time.
